Valentine Add & Solve
Preschool–Kindergarten
Objective Objective

Students will use manipulatives to solve addition problems with sums up to 10.

Materials

Materials Needed Preparation
  1. Print the Valentine Add & Solve mat, number tiles template and addition strips template. Make enough copies for yourself and each student in your class. Then cut out the number tiles and addition strips.
  2. Take one mat, one set of number tiles and one set of addition strips, and mount them on posterboard so you can use them in a pocket chart.

Procedure Procedure

  1. Place the pocket chart where the whole class can see it. Display the mat and one of the addition strips, such as “2 + 3 = ___.”
  2. Tell the class that you are going to use candy hearts or counters to work out the problem. Point to the first number in the problem and ask, “How many candy hearts do we have to start with? That’s right, we have two.”
  3. Hold up two candy hearts and tape them to the first heart on the mat.
  4. Point to the second number in the problem and ask, “How many candy hearts should we add to the first two? That’s right, we add three.”
  5. Tape three candy hearts to the other heart on the mat.
  6. Have the class count aloud with you as you add up the five candy hearts. Then ask, “How many candy hearts do we have now? Yes, we have five hearts.”
  7. Place the “5” number tile next to the addition strip. Reinforce the answer by pointing to the problem and saying, “Two plus three equals five.”
  8. Repeat the activity with other addition strips until students are able to solve the problems on their own.

Independent Practice

Independent Practice

  1. Provide each student with a set of pre–cut number tiles and addition strips, along with a mat and a box of candy hearts.
  2. Explain to students that you would like them to solve the addition problems on the strips. Invite them to use their candy hearts to work out the problems on their mats.
  3. Once students find the answer to the problem, encourage them to place the correct number tile next to the addition strip to complete the number sentence.
