Bushels of Sight-Word Fun
1st–2nd Grade
Objectives Objectives
  • Students will identify and pronounce sight-words.
  • Students will build reading vocabulary through sight-word recognition.
Materials Materials Needed Preparation: Print out the apple sight-word cards and make two copies on red construction paper. Have parent volunteers help you cut out the cards in advance. Choose the cards for the sight-words you would like to teach or review.

List the sight-words on the board. Tell students you are going to practice recognizing sight-words. Have them repeat each word aloud as you point to it.

  1. Distribute one set of sight-word cards to your students. Keep the other set.
  2. Pick a card and call out the word, such as “they.” Ask, “Who has ‘they’?”
  3. Prompt the student with the matching card to raise her hand. Have her spell the word on her card aloud. Then ask students to verify that she has the correct word. If she is correct, invite her to place the matching cards in a basket or bin.
  4. Continue until all of the pairs have been matched.

  1. Place both sets of cards in a learning center. Encourage students to use the cards to play “Pick an Apple” (a version of “Go Fish”).
  2. Have one student deal five cards to each player and place the remaining cards facedown in the center of the group.
  3. Instruct students to take turns asking other players for a certain card. A player might ask, “Sarah, do you have ‘could’?” If Sarah has that card, she gives it to the player and he lays down the matching cards to make a pair. If Sarah does not have the card, she says, “Pick an apple!” The player must then draw a card from the stack.
  4. The player with the most pairs at the end of the game wins!
