1st–2nd Grade

	Objectives Students will define “New Year’s resolution” and help make appropriate resolutions for the class. Students will create their own New Year’s resolutions.
	Materials Needed Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution by Pat Miller Chart paper or chalkboard Marker or chalk New Year’s Resolution reproducible Tagboard Self-adhesive magnetic strips Safety Scissors Crayons or markers Glue
	Introduction Ask students to raise their hands if they have heard of making a New Year’s resolution. Invite them to share what they think a resolution is. Explain that you are going to read aloud a make-believe story about a squirrel who makes a New Year’s resolution. Ask students to pay special attention to the story to find out what a resolution is and why people might make them at the beginning of each year.
	Procedure Read aloud Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution by Pat Miller. After the story, invite students to help you define “resolution.” (You may want to encourage them to look back at the story for assistance.) Write the collective definition on chart paper or a chalkboard. Invite students to help you brainstorm a list of resolutions you can make as a class (e.g., We can help other people, We can try to always follow the rules or We can be kind to our classmates).
	Independent Practice Give each student a copy of the New Year’s Resolution reproducible and set out the craft materials. Encourage students to think of their own resolutions and write them on the reproducible. Distribute the tagboard and magnetic strips. Instruct students to cut out and glue their reproducibles to the tagboard and attach the magnetic strips to the back. Encourage students to take their creations home and stick them on their refrigerators (or another magnetic surface) to remind them of their goal for 2012!
