Mystery Coins
1st–2nd Grade
Objectives Objectives
  • Students will identify coins and their values.
  • Students will find coin combinations that equal specific amounts.
Materials Materials Needed
Introduction Introduction

Hold up each coin and review its name and value. You may want to print out and display the Coin Values reproducible for students to use as a reference. Be sure to show students both sides of each coin, and remind them that larger coins do not necessarily have greater values.

Procedure Procedure

  1. Provide each student with a set of plastic coins or paper coins cut from the reproducible.
  2. On chart paper, write a value such as “20.” Ask students, “What coins can you add together to make 20 cents?” Give one or two students an opportunity to respond.
  3. Next ask, “What if I asked you to use exactly two coins to make 20 cents? Which coins would you use?” Call on student volunteers until a student gives the right answer (two dimes).
  4. Then ask, “What if I asked you to use exactly four coins to make 20 cents? Which coins would you use?” Call on student volunteers until a student gives the right answer (four nickels).
  5. Complete the activity a few more times using different amounts, such as 10 cents, 13 cents, 22 cents, 40 cents, etc. Ask students to make each amount two or three different ways.

  1. Give each student a copy of the “Mystery Coins” reproducible.
  2. Ask students to look at the first line on the reproducible. Tell them to place different coins on the circles until they have two that make 15 cents.
  3. Instruct students to write down how many of each coin they used.
  4. Prompt students to continue until they have completed the reproducible.

Challenge students to complete the “Try This!” activity at the bottom of the reproducible. Have them record their answers on back.
