Beginning Sounds Mitten Match
Preschool–Kindergarten
Objectives Objective

CCSS Reading: Foundational Skills
  • RF.K.3a: Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary sound or many of the most frequent sounds for each consonant.

Materials Materials Needed Preparation: Print out the Beginning Sounds Mittens. Then cut out the mittens. (You may want to laminate them so you can use them again.) Hide the letter mittens in easy-to-find places around the classroom. Set aside the picture mittens for use during the lesson.

Procedure

Procedure

  1. Hold up the stack of picture mittens for your students to see. Tell students, “Here I have one set of mittens. Each mitten has a different picture on it. Each of these pictures begins with a different letter sound. For example, this one has a picture of a bear on it.” (Hold up the picture mitten with a bear on it.) Then ask, “Can anyone tell me which letter makes the beginning sound you hear in bear?” Pause for responses, and then tell them, “Around the classroom, I have hidden mittens with different letters of the alphabet. See if you can find and match the letter mitten with the picture whose name begins with that letter’s sound.”
  2. Give one or two picture mittens to each student. Challenge them to look at the picture on the mitten, say the name of the picture and find the letter mitten with the beginning sound of the picture’s name. (Depending on the level of your students, you may want to limit the search to three or four minutes. Encourage students to help each other.)
  3. Have students return to their seats with their pairs of mittens. Hang two clotheslines on a bulletin board, and invite students to hang their mittens with clothespins on the clotheslines in alphabetical order. Title the bulletin board “We Found Our Matching Mittens!”

Independent Practice

Independent Practice

  1. Give each student a copy of the Mitten Match reproducible.
  2. Have students draw a line from the letter to the picture whose name begins with the same sound.

Extension Activity
