Preschool–Kindergarten

	Objectives Students will identify upper– and lowercase letters. Students will match uppercase letters to the corresponding lowercase letters.
	Materials Needed The Mitten by Jan Brett Alphabet Mittens template Mitten Match reproducible Clothesline and clothespins Preparation. Print out the Alphabet Mittens template. Then color and cut out the mittens. (You may want to laminate the mittens so you can use them over and over.) Hide the lowercase mittens in easy–to–find places around the classroom. Set aside the uppercase mittens for use during the lesson.
	Introduction Read aloud The Mitten by Jan Brett.
	Procedure Hold up the stack of uppercase mittens for your students to see. Tell students, “Here I have one set of mittens. Each mitten has an uppercase letter on it. I have hidden the lowercase mittens around the classroom. Let’s see if you can find and match each pair!” Give one or two uppercase mittens to each student and challenge students to find the matching lowercase mittens. (Depending on the level of your students, you may want to limit the search to three or four minutes. Encourage students to help one another as they search.) Have students return to their seats with their pairs of mittens. Hang two clotheslines on a bulletin board and invite students one at a time to hang their mittens on the clotheslines in alphabetical order. Title the bulletin board “We Found Our Matching Mittens!”
	Independent Practice Give each student a copy of the Mitten Match reproducible. Have students draw a line from each lowercase letter to the corresponding uppercase letter.
	Extension Activity Place the Alphabet Mittens in a learning center along with paper clips. Have students work with partners to clip together the matching mittens.
