Action-Packed Action Words
1st–2nd Grade
Objectives Objectives
  • Students will identify action verbs.
  • Students will list action verbs that begin with each letter of the alphabet.
Materials Materials Needed Preparation: Print and cut apart the Ten Naughty Little Monkeys word cards and have them ready to place in a pocket chart.

Introduction Introduction

  1. Ask students to raise their hands if they have ever heard the rhyme “Five Little Monkeys.”
  2. Remind students that the rhyme counts down from five monkeys to zero monkeys. Invite students to chant the rhyme with you:
Five little monkeys jumping on the bed,
One fell off and bumped his head.
Mama called the doctor, and the doctor said,
“No more monkeys jumping on the bed!”
  3. Continue until you have chanted all six verses.

Procedure Procedure

  1. Tell students you are going to read aloud a story called Ten Naughty Little Monkeys.
  2. Explain that this story begins with the familiar rhyme, but soon the monkeys are doing a lot more than just jumping on the bed!
  3. Teach students that the word jumping comes from the word jump. Jump and jumping are action words. They describe an action that someone does or is doing.
  4. Ask students to share other action words they can think of.
  5. Invite students to listen carefully for action words in the story.
  6. As you read, emphasize the main action word in each verse: jumping, racing, skating, climbing, rolling, hiking, fishing, playing, dressing and following.
  7. After you have finished reading, display the word cards in a pocket chart. Say each word aloud and prompt students to repeat the words after you.
  8. Invite students to identify the words that describe the monkeys’ actions in the story (jump, race, skate, climb, hike, play and follow). Use the title cards to sort the word cards into two groups: Action Words (verbs)/Not Action Words.

Guided Practice Guided Practice

  1. Prepare a piece of chart paper with the title Amazing Action Words.
  2. Invite students to brainstorm 10 action words. As students suggest each word, write them on the chart paper.
  3. Divide the class into groups of three or four. Ask each group to work together to come up with as many action words as they can.
  4. When students are finished making their lists, have each group share their words with the class. Add some words from each group on the chart paper.

Independent Practice Independent Practice

  1. Assign a word to each student and provide them each with a sheet of construction paper.
  2. Instruct students to write their word in the upper right-hand corner of their paper. Then have students draw a picture to illustrate the word.
  3. When students are finished, bind the pages together to create a class book titled Amazing Action Words!
