Directions:
1. Pour 1/2 cup of salt into a zip-close bag. Add several drops of food coloring.
2. Close the bag tightly. Make sure most of the air is out of the bag.
3. Mix the color into the salt by kneading the outside of the bag with your fingers.
4. Pour the salt onto a sheet of construction paper in a thin layer. Set aside to dry.
5. Repeat for each color. (See below for tips on color mixing.)
6. When all your colors are dry, pick up the sheets of construction
paper one at a time. Bend or fold the paper to make a trough
shape, then pour the salt into the bottle.
7. Pour each color into the bottle, layering one on top of the
other.
8. Put the lid on the bottle and display your artwork!
• Creating the colored salt is a great way to
explore color mixing with children. After youve
made salt in each primary color, mix two colors
together to make secondary colors. What color
do you get from combining red and blue? What
about blue and yellow? See how many different
colors you can create!
