This reading tie-in gives young children tons of writing practice—with a purpose!

This activity is appropriate for:
kindergarten - 3rd grade / 5 - 8 years

You will need:

Directions

  1. Choose a story about a character and his or her loved ones to read aloud with your child. Some suggestions include On Mother’s Lap by Ann Herbert Scott, Through Grandpa’s Eyes by Patricia Maclachlan, Love Is A Family by Roma Downey, and Abuela by Arthur Dorros.
  2. After reading the story, provide your child with the letter template and have him write a letter to a loved one, such as a grandparent, aunt or cousin. (For a younger child, you may need to offer assistance with spelling or help him decide what to write about.)
  3. Have him decorate the letter with crayons or markers and then read the letter aloud to you after it is finished.
  4. Help him fold the letter, stuff it in an envelope, address it for mailing, and apply the required postage.
  5. Take your child to the post office drop box to mail the letter. (For additional reading practice, encourage the recipient to write a simple response to your child.)
