Uncle Sam hat |
This patriotic Uncle Sam hat will have any child wearing the stars and stripes—with pride!
This activity is appropriate for:
pre-k - 3rd grade / 4 - 8 years
You will need:
- Spin & Draw Paper
- Construction Paper - 12" x 18" (White and Blue)
- Super-Safe Craft Tape Center - 1" (Red)
- Yarn Laces with Tips
- Star-Shaped Template
- Tape
Directions
- Invite children to cut a circle about 5 inches in diameter in the center of the spin & draw paper. This will be the hat’s brim.
- Use strips of red Super-Safe Craft Tape to make vertical stripes on the construction paper.
- Cut 6 evenly spaced slits along the bottom edge of the construction paper. Each should be about 1 inch long.
- Fold the construction paper into a cylinder and fasten with tape. Make sure the cylinder has the same diameter as the hole in your brim, so that it will fit inside.
- Slide the hat’s brim down onto the cylinder until the brim is level with the tops of the slits you cut.
- Fold the tabs up under the brim and fasten them with tape.
- Next, cut a strip of blue construction paper to measure 3" x 18" and glue it all the way around the base of the hat, just above the brim.
- Use the Star-Shaped Template to trace and cut out 6 small stars from white construction paper.
- Glue the stars onto the blue strip so that they are evenly spaced around the hat.
- Poke a hole in each side of the brim. Loop the yarn laces through the holes. This chin strap will help the hat stay on your child’s head. His new hat is ready to wear!
