Discover the world…as you turn a balloon into a kid-sized globe!

This activity is appropriate for:
1st - 3rd grade / 6 - 8 years

You will need:

Directions

  1. Mix together 1 cup water and 1 cup flour until the mixture is thin and runny. Now, have an adult stir in 4 more cups of hot water. Let this mixture cool.
  2. Blow up the balloon and tie it closed.
  3. Tear the newspaper into strips.
  4. Dip the newspaper strips in the flour/water mixture and stick them to the balloon. Try to cover the balloon with at least 3 layers of paper. Let this dry overnight.
  5. Use green and blue paint to paint the Earth on the balloon. You can use an atlas or print out a map from the Internet to help! Set aside to dry.
  6. October 12 is Columbus Day. Encourage children to use the globe to follow Columbus’ route to the New World. Find Portugal on the globe, and help children use their fingers to trace the route he sailed.
